A constant saying of mine when personal training is exactly what the title of this blog post reads: Foundation is Everything. No matter your fitness level, experience, or discipline; if you have a faulty foundation, you’re not going to get the results that you desire.
Visualize a nice high-end house for a couple seconds. Underneath the marble floors and clean hardwood, there lays the slabs, nuts and bolts, and wall systems that keep the house balanced. A.K.A. the foundation. Now, what happens when one of those pieces after years of repetition gives way? Correct. The foundation is askew.
Granted a small issue like a broken board is a simple fix. Taking the flimsy piece out of commission, installing a fresh slab as a replacement, and doing checks & balances to make sure the foundation is back to normal.
In the fitness aspect, the foundation is everything. As a personal example, I have leg imbalances meaning that my right leg is vastly stronger than my left. Due to athletics, injuries, and basically skipping leg days for years, my foundation showed alarming damage that needed my unwarranted attention.
So over the past few months, I’ve gone back to the basics. Various single-leg exercises such as single-leg presses, walking lunges, and glute bridges. Repeatedly. Not gonna lie: It SUCKS! However, if my goal is to compete on the field, pitch, or sand for years to come, I need TWO strong tree trunks of legs; not one decent branch and a fragile twig.
This also is true outside of the gym. Having a strong foundation mentally, physically, and spiritually is dire at the speed of life. Some days there’s events, people, and surprises that rock the foundation from outta nowhere. Whether you need a second or even a couple weeks, fix what’s wrong in order to find what’s right.
Foundation Is Everything. Before building more progress, build the inner workings to perform for the long haul instead of a short-term sprint. And if the foundation starts to crack, DO NOT IGNORE! Analyze the fault and what’s necessary to rebuild & reconquer. Then get back progressing.
“Only a fool would build a $1000 house on a $1 foundation.”
